RTPI launches Measuring What Matters research

Today sees the launch of research into how planning measures its impact on wider society. This important work was commissioned by the RTPI and jointly funded by the Governments of Ireland, Scotland and Wales, along with the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government and the Office of the Planning Regulator in Ireland.

This project was led by Kevin Murray Associates and we’ve been working with a team of academics and practitioners from across the UK and Ireland, Cardiff University, MacCabe Durney Barnes, yellow book and the University of Dundee, over the past 10 months.

This ability to measure the impact of planning is something that has been researched and spoken about plenty over the last decade. But planning has never managed to go beyond the theory of this. This research has produced a pathway and toolkit that helps authorities and others to work through a series of cycles of measurement that mean they can move from current understanding of performance (consents etc) right through to understanding the contribution planning makes to international outcomes such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
